I’ve just seen a leaked trailer of the first Jack Reacher movie adaptation. It stars the not very tall Tom Cruise as the six foot five inch vagabond military cop created by Lee Child. Like many people I was bemused by the casting of Cruise as the hard man with the heart of gold.
As the creator of an action hero in Mike Delaney who resembles Jack Reacher in some ways but is very different in others, I could not see and actor of the physical stature of Tom Cruise measuring up the role, however talented and charismatic they might be.It brings to mind the casting of Sean Connery as James Bond – now there was casting that made the Scottish actor and fitted the role of Bond perfectly.I had read most of the James Bond books before the first film, Dr No, was made but, many of today’s movie goers may never have read a Jack Reacher book so the persona of Tom Cruise will cast an indelible print on their view of the giant military cop.
But maybe Lee Child was smart when he approved the casting. Tom Cruise’s star presence could see a huge upsurge in sales and reissues of his books so I doubt if an actor well over a foot smaller and nowhere near as hefty won’t make a hoot of difference to his bank balance.
I am still waiting for a producer or an actor, such as Viggo Mortensen, to take on the role of Mike Delaney. He’s as tough if not tougher than Reacher but, as an ex monk, he has a spiritual dimension Lee Child’s character does not and does battle with his demons in every story.
Read ‘The Immortality Plot
‘ for a flavour of Irish American Mike Delaney and look out for the Delaney thriller ‘Good Girl Bad Girl’ very soon.
